The time has come, the lights are set, the bald head is not shiny (I'll explain later), and we are live in 5, 4, 3, quieter* 2, 1…
What is it like being the producer of “Coffee Anyone with Dr. Khan and Spike”? There is much more to it than what meets the eye.
We start with the very beginning of the birth of an episode. It all starts when a mommy cat meets a daddy cat… wait wrong story… each episode has a very special particular challenge. We start with our guests, they are what make an episode come together. When I first start a conversation with a new guest, a friendship immediately starts to bloom. After a meeting time is set, we start to get a meeting place set. With our many locations we film, which include Jesterline, Stone Tower, Dough Re Mi, Sweet a licious, Fish Hawk, or even our own office, each location has its own set of challenges.
People often ask what is the hardest challenge you face during the filming of each episode, the answer is Dr. Khan’s bald head. That dome of a head has to be hit with an exact camera angle to help prevent a very bright shining. Many say to use makeup; however, it is very difficult to powder that dome! The second hardest part is the electricity… I know right? With all of our equipment I find myself surveying each location for plugs and outlets just to plug in a light! We are very lucky to be doing this production professionally. Nothing is done with a shortcut, all is done for the pleasure of you at home.
That brings me to my next set of challenges, the equipment. We have been very blessed that each one of us brings something to the table. Each of us has a particular set of skills, skills that make us a nightmare to people like you… Sorry, I saw a “Taken” opportunity and had to say it. But our skills are special: For example…
Spike: Radio Producer for many years, voice over specialist, sound man for many many years, expert editor, etc.
Mikayla: Owned photography studio in Colorado “MNDPhotography”
Dr. Khan: Physician, personal skills, very quick thinking
Myself: Managed Youtube channels, worked in sound, been in theater, ran podcasts, etc.
So we all have something to bring to the table. Each skill comes together in this giant conundrum that we call our show.
Now we have reached our premier time. The audience is comfortable, all the lighting is perfect, the cameras are charged and ready, the coffee has been poured, and so the countdown begins. Even though each episode lasts only around 30 minutes, it may take up to 1-2 weeks of planning.
After all is said and done, the files have been transferred, and the episode is on a scheduled release date, we may finally take a breath. But then again… we will have another episode the next day. But what makes it all worthwhile? A simple “I love your show” or “That last episode was awesome” is what makes our whole world. Because it shows us that all the effort was done for a reason, and that reason is your enjoyment…
